The autumn sun has left the Salford sky,
And summer’s eye seems long since closed and gone.
The August rains astonished hot July,
And so, bereft, I’ll type a silent song
That will not drown the water-pipe’s cascade,
Or repel the invading neighbour’s sound.
But if I’ve found some temporary shade
From sonic fusillade and traffic’s pound
By sitting down here at my flatpack desk,
By setting a new task, a new career
As a sonnetteer, then I’d ask
For a daily basketful of rhymed ideas.
So splatter me with ringing English damp!
Here in my flat I’ll sing till spring’s bright lamp.
