We’re marching towards spring, the rains are here
The roads are puddled and the winds are strong
They buffet my small car, but still I steer
A straight path all the way to Essex. Long
Car journeys are the norm as we prolong
Our trips to all the stadiums. Today
It’s Colchester’s old ground. I take the wrong
Route when I get there, but I ask, and they
Give me directions. Despite Saturday
Shoppers clogging the roads, we still appear
At Layer Road early. The local tongue
A mixture of East Anglia and a
London twang. The home fans are in good cheer
At kick-off, but it’s Wolves’s victory song.
