528 - The day after the night after the day before

Don’t ever take naps in the afternoon,
And definitely don’t in the evening,
Because if you do, you’ll stare at the moon-
Light in your bedroom, or lie listening
To the radio or the neighbours talking,
Walking or anything, almost till dawn.
Even if they’re asleep you’ll be waiting
For the next noise, no matter how you yawn.
Yesterday afternoon couldn’t be borne:
All three of us fell in a kind of swoon,
Father, mother, daughter, all succumbing
To slumbering, forgetting we were born,
And so, because that rest made me immune
To night-time sleep, today I’ve been flagging.
