Oh no! Give me an extra hundred years!
This book on Shakespeare’s sonnets is so long,
And when that’s done, there’s War and Peace; then there’s
Turning Proust and the Bible into song;
Living in Argentina and Hong Kong;
Perfecting my guitar and keyboard skills;
Having a few more marriages go wrong;
Rewriting ever more lucrative wills.
Or maybe, instead, watching how light fills
The room slowly, then slowly disappears,
And other such inactions that prolong
Days, years, decades that rushing around kills.
But no! I can’t change into lower gears;
Like James Dean, I can’t wait to get along………****!
