148 - As I walked through a field an ant stopped me

As I walked through a field an ant stopped me
And said ‘Why don’t you help me?’ ‘Why,’ said I,
‘But I don’t know you. I can barely see
You from up here.’ ‘How selfish,’ came the sigh
From that small creature, who must have thought I
Would be intimately aware of his
Every need. ‘What’s the problem? I could try
To solve it, if you tell me what it is.’
‘But don’t you know, great one, all mysteries?’
Replied the ant, all disconsolately.
‘I feel that very soon now I shall die.’
‘How very ant-thropomorphic is this!’
I thought, but still I spoke a word or three:
‘Dear ant, my boot shall kindly end your misery!’
