149 - I walked on by and left the ant behind

I walked on by and left the ant behind
To live another hour or day or week
With no intent of good or evil kind
Towards the little or helpless or meek.
Like him I’ve always sought and still do seek
My own elusive happiness without
The energy or time to climb my peak
(So climbing every mountain range is out).
I wished the ant well, though I did not shout
It loud but merely thought it with my mind,
And with that thought, thought that I was unique
In my compassion; then I thought about
My hunger and what sacrifice I’d find
When I opened the fridge and took a peek.
