The family unit is essential,
Some say, to hold the whole thing together.
What’s paramount - the individual,
Or the society? Bird, or feather?
No contest, say I: we cannot tether
The bird because his feathers will not work
Together and fly. They must try, whether
They cry or sing on the wing; they can’t shirk.
Today in the garden we saw that quirk
Of nature; birds that circled as one, all
Working just like a well-trained squadron. Her
Eyes wide, Josephine smiled, and with that smirk
She saw how it can be: unity. Fall
Divided. Stand with father and mother.
